Speilberg gives a praising review: http://www.heatvisio...-star-wars.html
Underneath all the spectacular effects, I thought the story and characters were kind of lacking. But I'm already looking forward to the making of, because there was a /lot/ of work that went into the technical side of things. Too bad the story and characters kind of suffered as a result.

No the plot was terrible, the hype makes it sound way better. Just replace the Nav'i with the American Indians but have the Indians win and you got the movie. the special effects were really good thought and the colonel character was badass but thats it.

Hrmm...this is another case of needing to just enjoy a movie for what it is. The special effects were awesome, and if the storyline was original then the movie would have rated a bit more highly IMO.
For those of you who have watched more animated movies from the 90's, Avatar is basically Fern Gully in 3D. Watch both movies back to back and you will see what I mean, just replace the Na'vi with fairies, watch how there is a scene in EACH movie where the big yellow logging truck tears down important trees etc - the comparison is obvious.
Also throw in a little bit of Dances with Wolves for good measure. James Cameron paid for good visual effects, and Sam Worthington..who unfortunately dropped his american accent so many times that it was halfway through the movie that I clicked he was portraying an American (I'm an australian so I actually didn't notice his accent for a while).
Just my opinion, I enjoyed the movie, but more for the effects than any originality.

It was a great movie definitely lived up to the hype and in 3D even better I really enjoy fancy movies.

But really, I can almost predict the ending at the middle of the movie. Even what the movie is trying to tell is great, the way it designs lacks much. Good plot, to my opinion, needs foreshadow, coincidence, turn, and unpredictable endings. Avatar lacks them all.

The kids I was babysitting overpowered me and made me watch it, but soon ended up loving it! It's interesting, I thought it was original until I heard about the similarities between this and Pocahantus, good thing I've never seen it I guess, haha! And it's true when the hype said it's a visual breathrough, I couldn't keep my eyes off the screen at all.

After I saw the movie, I have to admit...I was kind of obsessed. I kept wishing that I can live in that world.
I wish I could go to Pandora!
