I've been actually watching a lot more movies lately, than I usually do.
Yesterday I found the time to pound down 3 - Bolt, Vantage Point, and Gran Torino.

Bolt was more geared towards kids than I had hoped. Definitely no Shrek or Toy Story.
Vantage Point was mediocre - don't regret watching it, but probably wouldn't want to watch it again. For a movie with as much action as it has, I was kinda bored. Surprising.
Gran Torino was much better than I had expected. But how bad can good old Clint be anyway? He has more talent in his little finger than most actors have in their whole body. I would actually recommend this movie to most.

Last movie at the theater was Salvation for me as well. I enjoyed it and thought it wasn't a disappointing addition to the franchise.

last film on dvd 'The Crew' gangster film set in Liverpool. Not great but Stephen Graham has a small part in it, and is as always brilliant. Incidentally has anyone seen 'Awaydays' about a football hooligan gang. I say this because i loved the book by kevin sampson, who also wrote the book for 'the crew' originally titled 'outlaws' i think. I know Stephen Graham has a part in it, but i don't think it will live up to the memory of the book.

Last film at the cinema 'this is england' quite a while ago.

2 out of 5 for 'the crew'
4 out of 5 for 'this is england'

Last film at the Cinema was last night - Public Enemy
Watching - The Kingdom in HD on my DVR right now.

Public Enemy - I thought was a bit too long. They could have cut some stuff out. Also I really did not think the character development was there. Depp did great, Bale was ok and held is own, but I expected a bit more out of it since Mann was doing it. The only relationship they developed was between Dillinger and his girl.

The Kingdom - Kinda of boring so far.

I thought it was an excellent movie. Clint Eastwood did a hell of a job with this film. It was far better than I thought it would be.

today, I watched:

Shinobi (blu-ray) -- Pretty solid asian period film -- 7/10
Defiance (blu-ray) -- Well done, but slow in parts -- 6.5/10
Natural City -- Korean blade runner/terminator hybrid.  definitely a visual masterpiece -- 6.0/10

Bottle Rocket (blu-ray) -- Criterion does not disappoint with this release.  one of the funniest, quirky movies out there.
Dark City (blu-ray) -- why is this movie so underrated?  Dark, well acted, pulpy.  Great film whose plot has been stolen by the Wachowski bros.
Gran Torino (blu-ray) -- "Ever notice how you come across somebody once in a while you shouldn't have fucked with?"  Great film, and that quote says it all

'the devil's rejects', saw it last night after seeing as its held in high regard on here on a couple of threads. Some sort of hybrid of 'last house on the left', 'texas chainsaw massacre', 'the hills have eyes', with a sprinkling of 'badlands', 'the wild bunch', and 'thelma and louise'. sick and exploitative, but if taken in the right context quite brilliant. the use of 'freebird' at the end.....well i will watch it again just for that finale.

I watched the Watchmen yesterday.
Have to admit I wasn't a fan of the movie in the end. Everyone said that it was "Too long", but it wasn't for what it was. I understand that they were trying to give a lot of background for those who have never read the comics (like myself), but in the end it felt like they spent 2 hours to tell you what HAD happened and 30 minutes worth of present events and action, which is why I think people were giving it the "Too long" line. I give it a 5/10, which I think is sad because I REALLY wanted to like this movie. The movie's only saving grace was Rorschach - he was a real bada$$.

Yes I agree with you, the only thing that was a positive in that movie was Rorshach. So far the BEST movie I have seen this year in the theater has been MOON. The WORST movie I have seen in the theater this year has been the WATCHMEN - I'm just very thankful I didn't watch it in Imax.

Well, that was weird. Went to see Orphan last night and there were two girls at the entrance passing out cards and pencils explaining that critics had been quite harsh on this movie and they wanted to take a viewer survey to see what we thought. So I caved and quickly looked up the review on Metacritic via my phone (I usually try to avoid reviews) and it was rated in the low 50s (out of 100) and the reviews indicated it was an absolute blood bath which isn't my speed so we bailed and hit "Public Enemies" instead. Let me know what ya'll think if you see it.

Wow. I would probably have bailed as well, just because they are so insecure about the movie being bad that they feel the need to pass out cards to ask what people think of it, is enough reason for me NOT to want to see it.
Very weird. I have never heard of this before. Is this a normal occurrence that I am not aware of?

Exactly, Saw. Here is a large group of people gathered at the entrance of the theater being held up by the girls passing out the cards, all of us clueless as to why. Apparently they were there on behalf of the studio in hope "real viewer review/feedback" would prove more favorable than the, as they called them, "harsh critic reviews". But as you say, telling an anxious group "here's a card to fill out to prove this movie doesn't suck as bad as the critics say" left everyone like "um, maybe we ought to just see Harry Potter". And some did. I saw Public Enemies. I love the Orphan trailer so hopefully someone less blood-shy than I will see it and report back.

I would never have pictured you as blood shy. How was Public Enemies?

I saw the Orphan Friday night and I didn't think that it was all that bloody.  It was a decent movie imo, not too bad, I did like the twist that it had in it.  No one was handing out cards for surveys at my theater though.  I would have given it a solid 7.  There was something definitely wrong with Esther!!!

saw 'awaydays' last night, a rites of passage film featuring football hooliganism circa 1979. Good performances, although stephen grahem was hardly streatched (he played the psycho skinhead Combo in 'this is england'), but features an awesome post punk soundtrack with joy division featuring heavily. can't quite remember the late 70s being quite so dark and gloomy, but then again i never lived in north west england.7/10 (mainly for the soundtrack)
